Meet the Designer: Welcome to the Sustainable Vision of John Hardy

This month, the enchanting nature-inspired designs of jewelry-maker John Hardy will be coming to the Toms River showroom of Corinne Jewelers. The designer’s dedication to his craft has been nothing short of astounding, and our staff is proud and excited to share his work with you and our wonderful clientele.

Since 1975, the Canadian artist has devoted his life to creating unique, sustainable works of art. In brainstorming his creations, John Hardy and his creative team bottles up the essence of Bali into signature motifs that can be found throughout his collections: the Classic Chain, the Modern Chain, the Legends collection, and more.

Each of the designer’s pieces are handmade by artisans at his workshop in Bali. Using techniques they have learned from earlier generations, each artist uses responsibly sourced precious stones and reclaimed metals to create the highly sought-after jewelry items. From Julianne Moore and Zendaya to Gina Rodriguez and even Zayn Malik, A-list celebrities have proudly flaunted their John Hardy statement pieces at red carpet events, awards ceremonies, and more.

Keep reading to learn more about some of the most popular collections making their way to Corinne Jewelers this month!

The Classic Chain collection

John Hardy's Classic Chain collection

Handwoven in sterling silver or 18 karat gold, pieces from the Classic Chain collection are held together with a simple pusher clasp. John Hardy’s one-of-a-kind 8-step jewelry design process ensures that each Classic Chain jewelry item stays true to the heart of the artisans that make them, as well as to the tradition that keeps their beautiful culture alive and thriving.

The Modern Chain collection

John Hardy's Modern Chain collection

The Modern Chain collection takes the iconic weave pattern from the Classic Chain collection and transforms it, streamlining and flattening it into a slightly-familiar-but-oh-so-different silhouette. This new woven design is perfect for those who love the look of the Classic Chain collection but are looking for something that’s a touch more contemporary.

The Legends collection

John Hardy's Legends collection

The Legends collection is made up of four mini collections that each represent a piece of Balinese mythology: the naga or water dragon, the cobra, the eagle, and the macan -- or as we know it, the tiger.

Most of the jewelry items from this collection is made up of the sculptured heads and tails of each of the animals, connected by a strap of braided leather or patterned metal. Each animal represents a set of specific qualities, and wearing a piece from a certain collection is said to invoke the qualities of the talisman: the naga for protection and love, the cobra for transformation and vitality, the eagle for independence and freedom, and the macan for courage and passion.

The Bamboo collection

John Hardy's Bamboo collection

Invoking his passion for sustainability, for the dramatically designed Bamboo collection the jewelry designer decided to give back to the world that inspired his brand. For every Bamboo jewelry purchase, John Hardy has committed to planting a certain number of bamboo seedlings in Bali. To find out how many bamboo seedlings your purchase has contributed to the cause, all you need to do is look at the back of your piece for a number etched into the metal.

So far, the “Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo” project has planted over 1 million young bamboo plants on the Indonesian island -- enough to cover Central Park 6 times over. Each handsculpted piece helps to preserve the beauty and vibrancy of Bali, from the island’s natural riches to the people who live in it.

Every John Hardy piece takes the beauty of the natural world in Bali and celebrates it, transforming into sophisticated and meaningful works of art you can take with you no matter where you go.
